What is Atrial Septostomy ?

It is a surgical procedure in which a small hole or gap is created between the two upper chambers of the heart called the atria. This procedure is done in children or adults with atrial septal defects or atrial transposition.It increases the oxygenation ability by allowing the atrial to pump blood properly. The hole is made using a catheter under general anaesthesia. There are different types of atrial septostomy based on the condition. Some of them are balloon septostomy, blade septostomy, atrial septal stenting, graded balloon dilation and radio-frequency based septostomy. It is also done in cases of other heart diseases like pulmonary hypertension.

  • Hemodialysis is a treatment to filter wastes and water from your blood, as your kidneys.
  • Did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance.
  • Important minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood.
  • Hemodialysis can help you feel better and live longer, but it’s not a cure for kidney failure.
  • You may be able to do hemodialysis at home. Normally, hemodialysis begins well before your kidneys have shut down to the point of causing life-threatening complications.

What is Atrial Septostomy ?

How is it done?

  • The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and pre-operative medication is given.
  • The procedure may be done in conjunction with an ultrasound or an echocardiogram to understand the course of the catheter better.
  • A special catheter having a balloon attached to its end is inserted into an artery or vein at the abdomen region. The catheter is then advanced through the blood vessels to reach the heart and the septum.
  • Once the catheter reaches the right atria, the end of the balloon is inflated and then driven into the left atria through the septum.
  • The balloon is then deflated and the catheter is removed from the body through its path of insertion. This creates the needed hole.
  • The area of insertion is cleaned, dressed and the patient advised to take bed rest. The patient may be on medication till their oxygen levels become normal.
