What is Continuous Renal Replacement therapy ?

CRRT is a type of blood purification therapy used with patients who are experiencing Acute Kidney Failure. During this therapy, a patient’s blood passes through a special filter that removes fluid and uremic toxins, returning clean blood to the body. The slow and continuous nature of the process, typically performed over a 24-hour period, allows patients with unstable blood pressure and heart rates, which is termed hemodynamically unstable, to better tolerate this process.

What is Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy ?

How is it done?

  • Before the procedure, the central venous line is placed in a sterile environment.
  • You will be connected to the CRRT machine continuously.
  • The machine works best if you lie still with little movement.
  • You may be given medicines, called sedatives, to help the CRRT run more smoothly.
  • The procedure proceeds as long and the patient is placed in Intensive Care during the entire process.
  • As your condition gets better, you may be changed to a less frequent dialysis called intermittent hemodialysis.
