What is Massage and Lymphatic Drainage ?

Also known as manual lymphatic drainage massage, it is the procedure where light pressure is applied on your limbs or extremities to flush out the accumulated lymph. Lymph is that body fluid which does not contain red blood cells but helps to carry water to tissues and clear waste from the body. Massage directed towards the lymph nodes helps de-coagulate the lymphatic system. The procedure is done by first massaging the adjacent areas of the lymph nodes, which leads to clearing the path for the lymph coming from the nodes. Then the motions of the massage are focused in such a way that fluid is directed towards the lymph nodes, where the waste products are removed from lymphatic circulation.

  • They then move in a proximal to distal direction in slow, tuned movements. The physiotherapist may use a topical medication for better effects.
  • The areas surrounding the lymph nodes are massaged with slightly higher pressure to relax the node and increase its functionality.
  • There are many lymph nodes scattered throughout your body. They are in the neck region, in the calf region, abdomen and axilla.
