What is Neonatal Ventilator Care?

There are special types of ventilators designed especially for neonates. These are called ‘neonatal ventilators’. A neonate or a newborn is kept on a ventilator when they are born premature, born with respiratory or cardiac abnormalities or have trouble maintaining a constant breathing pattern. Proper nutrition and some medications can also be administered via a ventilator. The ventilator also protects babies from external infections. Your baby can be on neonatal ventilation in the hospital itself or at your
house under professional supervision. The respiratory therapist and neonatologist will see to it that the oxygen levels required for your child’s weight, blood levels and associated medical conditions are met via the ventilator.

  • Hemodialysis is a treatment to filter wastes and water from your blood, as your kidneys.
  • Did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance.
  • Important minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood.
  • Hemodialysis can help you feel better and live longer, but it’s not a cure for kidney failure.
  • You may be able to do hemodialysis at home. Normally, hemodialysis begins well before your kidneys have shut down to the point of causing life-threatening complications.

How is it done?

  • The baby will be transferred to the room where the ventilators have already been set up.
  • For the air to be passed into your baby’s system, an endotracheal intubation and/or a nasogastric intubation are necessary.
  • Before intubation, the baby may be given sedatives to help with the process. A thin flexible tube (endotracheal tube) is then inserted into their windpipe through their mouth.
  • Another thin tube (nasogastric tube) can be inserted into their foodpipe to help with the nutrition.
  • Once the tubes are secured with adhesive tapes, the mechanical ventilator pumps air in and out the baby’s airway with two different tubes.
  • The levels of oxygen will be constantly recorded on the attached monitor.
