What is Neonatal Ventilator Care?

There are special types of ventilators designed especially for neonates. These are called ‘neonatal ventilators’. A neonate or a newborn is kept on a ventilator when they are born premature, born with respiratory or cardiac abnormalities or have trouble maintaining a constant breathing pattern. Proper nutrition and some medications can also be administered via a ventilator. The ventilator also protects babies from external infections. Your baby can be on neonatal ventilation in the hospital itself or at your
house under professional supervision. The respiratory therapist and neonatologist will see to it that the oxygen levels required for your child’s weight, blood levels and associated medical conditions are met via the ventilator.

Endotracheal Intubation

It is one of the invasive support procedures done on newborns suffering from cardiac or respiratory problems. The tube will be placed into the windpipe of your baby through which constant airway can be maintained. Simply put, this creates artificial breath support for your baby.

Vaccinations

Newborns, even healthy ones, have to take a list of vaccines at their scheduled age to prevent the risk of diseases and suffering in the future. New-born vaccinations are nothing but an immunization scheme to see that each baby gets immunized against diseases that can be avoided.

PICU and NICU for Infants

PICU is the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and NICU is the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. PICU is for critically ill pediatric patients (children under the age of 21) suffering from severe medical conditions whereas NICU is for neonates or newborns suffering from critical medical conditions.
