What is Pediatric or Child Neurology ?

It is that branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up in diseases related to the nervous system and brain in neonates, newborn children, infants, and young adults. These professionals specialize in handling the nervous system ailment in such a way that the child’s normal functionality is preserved and the condition is manageable throughout their older years.  Children suffering from spinal cord issues, peripheral and autonomous nervous system issues involving muscles and/or blood abnormalities, and more will be handled by child neurologists. The diseases may be genetic, traumatic, pregnancy carried, child seizures, autism, ADHD, and other mental disorders along with birth defects.

  • Did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance.

How are they treated?

  • Each child is screened for their overall health at the time of birth. Some conditions may be detected at this stage and some conditions will be detected during the growth as the growth milestones cannot be met at the right time.
  • When a child presents with neurological conditions, the professional take their birth history, family history, and trauma history if any and performs certain screening tests like ECGs, CT, MRI, PET, etc, to know the cause.
  • Based on the condition and the test results, the children will be put on immediate care if the condition is severe or on medication, if the condition seems treatable.
  • Treatment options may range from prevention, pharmacotherapy, disability rehabilitation, function regaining, and community support to surgery and physiotherapy.
