What is PET Scan ?

PET scan or Positron Emission Tomography is a diagnostic imaging technique used to detect a disease with the use of small amounts of biologically active compounds. A tracer is introduced into the body and its actions visualized. It is used to diagnose diseases of the heart, lung, brain, gastrointestinal tract and more. It is based on the principle that the action of the tracer material depends on the metabolic activity of the tissues. It gives a clear view of the biological, chemical and metabolic changes in a tissue. It can also provide input on the progress of a treatment.    It can detect abnormalities even before an anatomical change occurs.

  • Hemodialysis is a treatment to filter wastes and water from your blood, as your kidneys.
  • Did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance.
  • Important minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood.
  • Hemodialysis can help you feel better and live longer, but it’s not a cure for kidney failure.
  • You may be able to do hemodialysis at home. Normally, hemodialysis begins well before your kidneys have shut down to the point of causing life-threatening complications.

  • Since it works with a tracer, a patient is prepared accordingly before being injected. The tracer can be oral, inhalational or injectable. The patient must take time and let the body absorb the tracer.
  • Inform the doctor if you have any allergies, are on medication or are pregnant or breast-feeding. Often, the effects of tracers on different patients may be different based on their medical history.
  • Once in the scan room, you will be asked to lie on the scanning table and run through a doughnut-shaped hole.
  • The procedure is relatively painless and can be completed in under an hour.
  • The radiologist then communicates with a team of doctors and based on your PET scan report, gives you a sound diagnosis.
