What is Transplant surgery

Transplant surgery can be done for many reasons. It can be for complete transplantation of an organ or partial tissue replacement and/or graft placement during a whole different surgery. Organ-specific Transplant surgeries are done when the receiver & organ is completely dysfunctional and has to be removed. The organs are replaced with healthy ones from a donor or in some cases an organ bank or reserve. Transplant surgeries range from minute stem cells transplant to complex heart and vital organs transplants. The liver, heart, lungs, and kidneys are the most commonly transplanted organs whereas bone marrow transplants, cord blood transplants, and peripheral blood stem cell transplants are the most common cell transplants.

What is Trauma surgery

Trauma surgery is the interventional, open surgical procedure done to treat injuries, fractures,
burns, ulcers, herniation, crush injuries, and more in an acute setting using both operative and non-
operative management techniques. The injuries can be due to heavy impact forces, road traffic
accidents, falls or object crushes, sports injuries, and more. Trauma surgery also has knowledge of
the adjacent musculoskeletal structures and vital structures like nerves and arteries because
whenever an injury occurs, it is most likely to involve one or the other adjacent structures. The
injuries may be life-threatening too. Trauma surgeons are trained in immediate and complete
management of the injury.

How is it done?

  • Before a transplant, a very detailed medical examination of both the receiver and the donor will be done to avoid compatibility-related post-operative problems.
  • A donor can either be a close family member whose medical records are fit, an unrelated person, or a recently deceased person given, their organs are deemed suitable.
  • Based on the transplant procedure the surgery can be open or minimally invasive
  • For minimally invasive techniques like stem cells transplants the procedure can be done through a simple bloodstream infusion.
  • For more complex organ transplants, an incision will be made at the area of interest, the overlying tissues are dissected, the affected organ removed and the donor organ placed.
  • The donor organ may be placed with or without its own blood vessels and nerves
  • These new blood vessels and nerves will be attached to the receiver's own system and will be sutured together.
  • After the transplant is done the patient will be regularly monitored for any adverse reactions and the healing assessed.
